SONIA KHURANA
OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DESIGNER Sonia is an avid urban explorer and a professional hike leader. She's also a mother of four and a Speech & Drama teacher when she isn't spelunking in some undiscovered cavern on her own.

Sonia attributes her love for the outdoor to her mother who encouraged her to explore the world freely at a young age. Sonia embodies The Alpha Mind's philosophy that the world is indeed our classroom. Academically, Sonia was top of her class, but her thirst for knowledge led her to continually push personal boundaries and pick up new skills everywhere she went. While her peers were going out for movies and dates during the school holidays, Sonia was out somewhere trekking mountains. She put her wanderlust life on hold at the age of 23 to start a family. After devoting her life to raising four children and taking care of the household as a full time mother and wife, Sonia decided to continue where she had left off in 2018 and pursued a life of adventure. To date, she has traveled to, or led hikes, in places like Bhutan, Switzerland, and a large part of Asia. |
Featured Stories @ TFN Mr Tay shares one such activity from The Hero Within programme he piloted at YMCA’s SCC, based in Zhangde Primary School:
“I encouraged the children to create colourful origami butterflies. When I asked the students what they thought this project was all about, they explained that the young of the butterfly is a caterpillar, and it’s on the ground just crawling away, very ugly, but if you believe enough in yourself, you can actually have the possibility and potential to grow into a beautiful butterfly and fly around the world. Through this activity, children learnt to believe in themselves – simple, yet it sends a very powerful message.” |
